Last week’s Hikurangi Youth Connect event at the Hikurangi Rugby Club brought close to 50 rangatahi through the doors, along with whānau, employers, training providers and community organisations. The afternoon had a relaxed, positive feel, with young people moving between providers, chatting with employers, and sharing their ideas about what they want to see in Hika. The BNZ sub‑committee has now raised over $100,000 toward restoring the old BNZ building. Repiling and waterproofing are scheduled to begin in Spring 2026, with the building expected to be usable by the end of the year. Stage 2 will focus on beautification and future use, with more fundraising to come.

Thanks to Whangārei District Council’s 2026 funding, Hikurangi’s CCTV network — now around 15 cameras — continues to deter crime and support NZ Police with clear footage and licence‑plate recognition. The system has already helped solve local incidents, and the Hikurangi Business Association plans to expand coverage to keep our community even safer.

The temporary pump track has shown just how much energy and enthusiasm there is for youth spaces in Hikurangi. Creating a skatepark beside the rugby club opens the door for a true community hub, sport, play, riding, and whānau all in one place. Council is inviting the Hikurangi community, especially kids and families, to help shape the design of the new skatepark and playground.
