BNZ Restoration Project Update: August 2026

The BNZ sub‑committee is pleased to share a major milestone in the restoration of the old BNZ building. As of July 2026, more than $100,000 has been raised through local fundraising ventures and funding streams, allowing us to move ahead with the repiling and waterproofing phase of the project.

With winter weather in full swing, much of the work right now is happening behind the scenes. Our team is securing the necessary permissions, consents, and planning documentation so that structural improvements can begin in Spring/September, when conditions are more cooperative.

The historic Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) building on King Street in Hikurangi is a 1910 heritage landmark currently undergoing a community-led restoration.

Although the BNZ is a small building, the restoration is a significant undertaking. A wide team of experts is involved, including architects, surveyors, engineers, builders, electricians, plumbers, and council compliance staff. Once the repiling, plumbing, and core structural work is complete, we expect the building to be in a usable condition by the end of 2026.

From there, we’ll move into Stage 2: beautification and future use of the building. This next phase will require further fundraising, and the committee will begin working on this over the coming months.

The BNZ project continues to be a true community effort, and we’re grateful for everyone who has supported the journey so far.
