Hikurangi is set for a busy few weeks of long‑awaited improvements, with both King Street footpath replacements and a full reseal of George Street scheduled for early 2026. These works will bring safer, smoother access through the village, but they will also create temporary changes for drivers, pedestrians, and local businesses.
This combined update outlines everything you need to know.
King Street Footpath Replacement
Start date: Monday, 19 January 2026
Duration: Approximately 4–6 weeks
Location: Southern side of Four Square to the southern side of Hikurangi Takeaways
What’s Happening
Contractors will remove and replace the footpaths along this section of King Street, including new kerbing and driveway entrances. Work will be completed in segments, beginning at Hikurangi Takeaways and progressing toward Four Square.

Access and Parking
Pedestrian access to all businesses will remain open throughout the project.
Parking on the shop side of King Street will be restricted to allow machinery to operate safely.
Visitors and locals are encouraged to use the vacant yard beside the hall and the hotel carpark during this period.
Traffic control will support safe pedestrian movement.
Two‑way traffic will remain open, with only minimal disruption expected.
These upgrades have been a long time coming, and we encourage the community to welcome and support the Red Dell team as they complete this important work.
