Sharlene Chats with WDC About Her Favourite Hikurangi Spots

Our Hikurangi Community Development Co‑ordinator Sharlene Morris‑Ross recently spoke to the Whangārei District Council about the places she loves in her village, offering a concise local guide that blends nature, history and community spirit.

Sharlene’s top pick is Lake Waro. As she says, “Lake Waro and the limestone rocks are always a favourite. There’s a short walk, picnic areas, bird watching, and you can cool off in the lake to beat the summer heat”.

She also points to a developing shared path from Mower Road that provides riverside walking, swimming holes and mountain‑biking opportunities for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

She recommends sampling treats at Hikurangi Home Cookery, and names Miners Rest Café and the local mobile coffee caravan as great places for coffee and community catch‑ups. The Hiku Art & Vinyl shop and the monthly Hikurangi Lions markets are called out as spots to find local produce, crafts and bargains.

For families, Sharlene recommends the Council pump track and sports park, plus nearby attractions such as Adrenalin Adventure Park for a day of outdoor fun. She emphasises that many of the village’s facilities are free and accessible, making Hikurangi an easy stop for road‑trippers and locals alike.
