In a rural town like Hikurangi, having reliable access to books, services, and community support close to home makes a real difference. Our community‑run library on King Street does exactly that, offering a locally funded, volunteer‑powered alternative to travelling into Whangārei or waiting for the mobile library to visit. It’s a practical, welcoming space built by locals, for locals, ensuring that reading and connection stay within easy reach for everyone in our community.
A Library Powered by Local People
Owned by Friendship House, our long-standing community trust, and run by passionate volunteers, the library is a testament to what Hikurangi can achieve together. Every open hour, every new book on the shelves, every service offered is made possible by locals who give their time to keep this taonga thriving.
With monthly visits from the Whangārei Mobile Bus (from which the library borrows around 100 books) and annual funding used to purchase brand-new and recently published titles, the collection stays fresh, relevant, and well-stocked for readers of all ages.
More Than a Place to Borrow Books
The library is designed to meet the needs of the whole community, not just readers.
Alongside free book loans, it offers practical, affordable services that make a real difference for rural households:
Membership options for casual, individual, or family use
Wifi access at low rates
Photocopying and scanning
Public computer access
Puzzle hire
“The Vault” a workspace available for community use or private hire
These services mean locals don’t need to travel into town for everyday tasks like printing, scanning, or accessing the internet. It’s convenience, affordability, and community care wrapped into one small but mighty space.
Membership Options That Work for Everyone
To keep borrowing simple and accessible, the library offers three membership types:
Free Casual Membership: borrow up to 10 books at a time, with a small fee for new releases
Individual Membership ($12/year): unlimited borrowing, free new releases, free wifi each visit, and $2 book collection/delivery
Family Membership ($30/year): the same great benefits, designed for households
You don’t need a membership to use services like wifi, printing, or The Vault — but membership helps keep the library sustainable and stocked with new books.
Visit, Support, or Get Involved
The library is open Monday to Friday, 10am–2pm, and new volunteers are always welcome.
Whether you borrow books, donate, join as a member, or simply spread the word, every bit of support helps keep this locally funded service alive for the next generation.
Pop in, say hello, and discover what a community-powered library can do.
