Hikurangi Launches First Ever Machinery Clearance Auction to Support Historic BNZ Building Restoration

Hikurangi’s strong rural spirit is set to shine this April with the launch of the first‑ever Hikurangi Machinery Clearance Auction, taking place Friday 24 April 2026 at 150 Marua Road, Hikurangi.

Created in response to the gap left by the sale of the Kauri saleyards — which for many years hosted machinery and farm sundries sales — the event offers farmers, contractors, lifestyle block owners, and rural households a much‑needed local venue to move gear.

The Hikurangi auction is independently organised and is not affiliated with the Kauri saleyards; future activity at the Kauri site is unknown. Organisers say the Hikurangi Machinery auction is designed to bring people together, support practical on‑farm needs, and strengthen community connections.

Machinery Auction Backing the Restoration of the Historic BNZ Building

A portion of the commission from all sales will go toward restoring the historic BNZ building on King Street, a landmark with deep ties to Hikurangi’s mining and farming past. The building is currently the focus of a major community fundraising effort, with locals working to bring it back to life as a future hub for events, services, and whānau‑centred initiatives.

Event committee member Councillor Martin says the auction is a natural extension of the town’s grassroots momentum:

“Hikurangi has always been a community that shows up for each other. With the sale of the Kauri saleyards, we saw a real need — not just for a place to sell machinery and farm sundries, but for something that brings our rural community together again. This auction does both: it fills a gap and helps us restore a building that belongs to everyone.”

He adds that keeping commission rates low is an intentional part of supporting the district:

“We’ve kept commission rates low so it’s affordable for locals. It means farmers can move gear without big costs, and the community still benefits from every sale.”

A Positive, Practical Event for the Rural Community

Organisers say the auction is designed to be more than a sale day. It’s a chance for locals to connect, support each other, and contribute to a project that will benefit Hikurangi for generations.

“Every item sold helps us take another step toward bringing the BNZ building back to life,” Sharlene, organising event committee team member says. “It’s a practical event with real community impact — exactly what Hikurangi does best.”
