A Trail Ride Built by the Community, for the Community

Updated: Feb 25

Held at 78 Valley Road, Hikurangi, the Hikurangi Trail ride welcomes riders, families and spectators for one or two days of riding and outdoor fun across rural Northland.

From the start, the aim has been simple: create an accessible recreational event that raises funds and support for local projects, services and community initiatives.

One recent event alone brought in more than 300 riders across the weekend and raised over $8,000 for local groups and services, with every dollar reinvested directly back into the Hikurangi community.

Supporting the Local Community

More than a riding event, the Hikurangi Trail Ride has become a reliable fundraising driver for Hikurangi, Whakapara and nearby Northland communities.

Funds raised help:

  • Support community projects and services

  • Assist local clubs and volunteer organisations

  • Contribute to shared infrastructure and resources

  • Strengthen community hubs and facilities

Past events have also supported restoration of important local buildings intended for community use.

Teaching the Next Generation: The Hikurangi Kids Club

One of the most valuable parts of the Hikurangi Trail Ride is its Kids Club riding programme.

This initiative gives young riders the chance to:

  • Learn bike safety and riding basics

  • Understand personal safety around motorcycles

  • Practise on purpose-built beginner circuits

  • Build confidence before moving to larger, more powerful bikes

During an early trial of the programme, children were able to learn safely on quad bikes or two-wheel bikes in controlled environments designed for beginners.

The Kids Club reflects the event’s wider purpose: building skills, confidence and safe riding habits for local youth.

Tracks Designed for Every Rider Level

The Hikurangi Trail Ride is designed to be inclusive, accessible and family friendly.

The existing course includes:

  • A 10 km riding loop

  • Multiple track options for different abilities

  • Terrain across farmland

  • Sections suitable for beginners through to experienced riders

The course has been shaped so riders of all skill levels can take part safely while still enjoying a good challenge.

Looking Ahead: Planned Track Expansion

Organisers are committed to growing the Hikurangi Trail Ride experience.

A proposal is underway to expand the track network:

  • From the existing 10 km loop

  • To a potential 30 km extended trail system

The expansion would use additional connecting land and forestry access routes to increase ride variety and length while keeping the event’s community focus at the centre.

Progress depends on a successful resource consent application, which is currently in motion.

More Than a Ride, it a Weekend Experience

The Hikurangi Trail Ride encourages riders to bring friends and whānau and make a full weekend of it, with food, a relaxed social atmosphere and activities on site.

It is not just about motorcycles.

It is about:

  • Outdoor recreation

  • Family-friendly experiences

  • Youth skill development

  • Community fundraising

  • Supporting rural Northland
