Well, the sun was shining and the performances were on point, Hika‑Riki, you did not disappoint.
I had the privilege of being in attendance for most of the day, and Hikurangi School, you absolutely did your community proud. It was a fantastic event from start to finish.
The performances from all kura were phenomenal. A big shout‑out to Blomfield School, Maungatapere School, Whau Valley and Kamo High School, who performed for the first time at the festival, your tamariki were outstanding and added something special to the day. And a particularly warm mihi to Hikurangi Educare. Your little ones were incredibly brave getting up on stage, and the whole crowd felt the pride of that moment.
Ka Pai to all the schools involved; Blomfield School, Glenbervie School, Hikurangi Educare, Hikurangi School, Maungatapere School, Maromaku School, Te Horo School, Te Kamo High School, Te Kamo Primary School and Whau Valley School. The range of performances across our kura was outstanding and added real depth to the day.
I was genuinely blown away by the respect shown as students sat and watched each other perform. There were so many parents and whānau in attendance, and it was an incredibly enjoyable day for everyone. Students were well‑behaved, supportive of each other, and represented their kura in a way that made everyone feel poho kererū. A great day, Hikurangi.
The kai was also amazing and very well priced. Students supported whānau behind the stalls throughout the day, helping serve community and handling money with confidence and care. You all did a great job, truly impressive mahi.
A real highlight was Lani Daniels, who spent time with the tamariki, shared her championship belts, and kept the day moving with her great commentary and encouragement. Her presence added something extra special for the kids and whānau alike.
The dedicated tent for our kaumātua ensured they had the best seats in the house, with a clear view of every performance. It was an inclusive and warm event, with so many schools in attendance and a real sense of community throughout the day.
At the end of each group’s performance, they were presented with a certificate and a tree to take back and plant at their Kura, a beautiful way to carry the spirit of Hika‑Riki home.
Behind the scenes, the school has spent much of the term practising, planning and preparing. With the kids now on school holidays, Hika‑Riki was a perfect way to finish Term 2, a moment to pause, reflect and celebrate everything our tamariki have achieved.
Ka rawe, Hikurangi.
