COMPLETED, CLOSED
In 2020 it was noted that there was a need for access to a public transport service that allowed Hikurangi residents to travel between Hikurangi and Whangarei. The Hikurangi Community Development Coordinator worked closely with the Northland Regional Council who produced a trial bus programme in a number of semi-rural locations to see if/where the service was needed, including Hikurangi, Parua Bay, and Bream Bay.
Whilst initially the service wasn't well attended with covid restrictions in place, often leaving the service non-operational, it eventually picked up in 2023 and is still operational today with around half a dozen patrons per trip.
The service operates from Hikurangi to the Rose St terminal in Whangarei on Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving the King St bus stop (opposite Miners Rest Cafe) at 9.50am, and returns from Rose St to King St at 1.30pm (leaving time). The fare for the bus service is $3 per person each way, with children under 5 free and gold card options for pensioners.
