Whānau Āwhina Plunket has its origins in early twentieth century Aotearoa and grew out of the efforts of many people who were passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of pēpi, babies and their mothers.
Evidence shows getting things right in the first 1000 days of a child’s life will set them up for better outcomes later in life. We're proud to visit over 85% of all newborn babies in Aotearoa and support whānau and their tamariki.
Healthy tamariki – We make sure every child/tamariki can be as healthy and well as they can be.
Confident whānau – We build the confidence and knowledge of whānau and families across New Zealand.
Connected communities – We make sure no family or whānau is left isolated, disconnected or unable to cope.
Plunket visits are free, and come under the Well Child/ Tamariki Ora programme – a series of health assessments and support services provided to families in New Zealand by the Ministry of Health.
There are eight core Plunket visits, completed by a registered Plunket nurse.
We also offer additional visits from the wider Plunket team on things like sleep and settling, breastfeeding, becoming smoke-free, and starting solids.
We have a community clinic located in the heart of Hikurangi with a community plunket nurse who does appointment based visits on Wednesdays.
