Established in 1915, the Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade has been proudly serving our community for more than a century. Today, the brigade is made up of dedicated volunteers who work together to protect our community, support emergency response and help keep people safe.

Our Fleet
The brigade operates a fleet of three appliances:

641 — our primary fire appliance, equipped to respond to a wide range of emergency incidents.

6411 — our tanker, providing additional water capacity for firefighting operations, especially where access to a reliable water supply may be limited.

6429 — our support appliance, used to assist the brigade at incidents and for operational requirements.

Together, these vehicles give the brigade the equipment, water and resources needed to respond effectively to emergencies.

Our Members
Our brigade is made up of three important groups:

Firefighters
Firefighters respond to emergencies including structure fires, vegetation fires, medical calls, motor vehicle incidents, hazardous situations and other callouts. They train regularly to maintain their skills, equipment and readiness to respond at any time.

Operational Support (OS)
Operational Support members assist firefighters at incidents and help the brigade operate safely and effectively. Their roles include scene safety, traffic management, lighting, logistics, communications and other tasks that allow firefighters to focus on the emergency.

Brigade Support
Brigade Support members help with the day‑to‑day running of the brigade. This can include administration, fundraising, events, catering, community activities, equipment and general brigade needs.

Training
Training is held every Monday at 6.30pm at our Alfred Street base.

Cadets (ages 16 and up, with parental permission for younger members) train on Mondays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Cadets learn the basics of firefighting and help during public events.

Want to Join Us?
You can join the brigade from the age of 16. Whether you’re interested in becoming a firefighter, operational support member or brigade support member, there are opportunities to get involved, learn new skills and make a real difference in our community.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens at training or thought about joining, come down on a Monday night and have a look. Meet the crew, see what we do and find out how you can get involved. There’s no obligation to join just because you visit.

Serving our community for generations. Everyone is welcome to come and see what it’s all about.
