Whakapara Marae

Naumai, haere mai, piki mai, kake mai.

Whakapara Marae sits at the heart of the Whakapara community on Puhipuhi Road beside the Wairua River, around ten minutes north of Hikurangi on State Highway 1. The wharenui is Te Ihi o Nehua. The marae affiliates to the Ngāti Hao and Ngāti Hau hapū, who affiliate to Ngāpuhi.

The marae is a place of gathering, learning and connection. It is a living centre of whakapapa, tikanga and whanaungatanga, where relationships are strengthened and knowledge is passed between generations. Hui, tangihanga, celebrations and kaupapa are hosted here throughout the year, supporting the community in times of both challenge and joy.

Whakapara Marae also serves as an emergency response hub for the wider community. During severe weather or local emergencies, the marae opens its doors so whānau can rest, wash, share kai and kōrero. Nau mai always.

For locals, Whakapara Marae represents continuity and belonging. It holds the history of the area with care, guided by the values of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga. Its presence anchors the wider Whakapara community and continues to shape its cultural and social fabric.
